 Venture 4, Lawrence and a Gleamy Cloud, questions different modes of representation and talks about food and its creation. Primarily we present a series of views on how food finds representation, predication and valuation. We characterize attempts that intend to make up models and formalize units that which however find use for the definition of activities and processes alongside the production of food; the so far called value chains. Therein generalized values add up to a sum total — the product of food. But, what if one does not primarily pretend to know what “It” is? This Venture attempts to invert the manners of pre-valuation and contrarily starts of from an immense product of givens — a collection of data-sets. We thereby break new ground. A ground that comprises plenty of indexes. A computational instrument erects a reduced model that filters the generic ground of the plenty for stabilities. This probabilistic setup of a stochastic cloud hosts symbolic originalities that can make the richness of the given data alongside many Characters of an alphabet in an indexical manner graspable. It symbolizes the noisy ground and thereby lets the yet mute mass talk. The Characters Talks transports consistent theories that might be able to guide future practices. The instrument gives guidance on the way to make sense of that which is yet new and unknown. It allows to circle around and mark the quasi-object of food. In order to exemplarily do so, we link the application in this Venture back to the articulations of the Chocolate from Cacao Cell Cultures of Venture 1.

 Venture 3, Terroir and Talks, deals with the object of wine and it’s many subjects. We question prominent figures that issue their perspectives on describing wine. They comprise topics such as the measurements of environmental particularities in the vineyard, an extensive wine analysis as well as individual consumer voices of wine tasters. Together these subjects allow for the rich culture of wine. In the further course of this venture, we open the floor for even more voices about wine. We listen to these individual subjects and collect them as givens, as plenty in form of data, and make them as a vast and generic ground accessible. We prepare these grounds and thereupon setup an instrument. Therefor we instrumentalize the data and shape a pre-specific computational model of wine that operates between the local and global and thereby casts off Terroirs of symbolic Characters. These Characters allow for Talks, renderings of consistent theories, that can potentially further mark the already rich cultural artefact — the quasi-object of wine — alongside of quasi-subjects, such as the local vineyard environment, individual wine analysis as well as subjective wine taster’s sentences, in a playful manner.

 Venture 2, Remote and Sense — A Vine Yard, addresses different forms of wine cultivation. We initially stage a series of distinct views that deal with the craft of making wine in the vineyard. On the one hand local crafts are kept alive by them being treated as traditions that which can be passed on as real exercises in time. This necessitates an active and immediate involvement in the vineyard in order to guarantee a neat hand over of specific skills from generation to generation. On the other hand analytical and scientific approaches aim for generalizations and an objectification. Both attempts have in common, that they in principal remain on the sensible and empirical side. In order to abstract from that, we primarily scour about traditions, knowledge and novel techniques that are currently already at our hands. Based upon previously collected experiences and measurements, this Venture sets up a remote Vine Yard. This remote model provides an intelligible instrument — a ruler and a compass — that can characterize the plenty of collected data and thus allows us to deal with the richness of particularities in the vineyard. It opens up a projective space of theories that can help us to guide practical activities in the vineyard and that further enables a learning by means of the cultivation of an object of wine in a novel remote Vine Yard.

 Venture 1, CAST OFF — Chocolate from Cacao Cell Cultures, questions a variety of characteristic views on grounds and manners that which are prevalent in the contemporary world of agriculture and food. The predominant global systems operate and reason upon primarily limited and naturalized grounds. They aim to sustain by means of a fixation of an equilibrium within the surrounding environment and thereby allow for their constantly optimized (re-)production. In this Venture, we challenge the seemingly manifest (re-)sourcing of food in nature. We watch out for techniques that entail the potential to alter the way we think, cultivate and talk about food and its production. Thereupon we propose to apply the technique of cell cultivation. This technique allows for an engagement with nature on a local level and thus to become its host. It makes the cells a generic ground. This primarily unlocks chance, which presumes a loss of control and order, though the instrumentalization of the technique allows for stabilities that which can be contracted and cultivated. The instrument, if mastered and played skillfully, enables to stage vigorous applications on yet noisy natural grounds. The circularity of this endeavor casts off and hosts natures that which constantly reward us with novel digestible articulations — luxuriations on a novel site — that which we would like to characterize as particularly sustainable.

Medium, sea, ground, noise, atmosphere. Rare, island, stability, artifact, life. Me, jointing, weaving, gardening, writing.

 “Planetary Garden — How to help the earth move” Our garden is universal, local and global at the same time. Its informational. And atmospheric. A generic instrument. With fences, limits, thresholds, filters. Permeable and porous. A random local site of random size merely becomes our space for manoeuvres. We know its environmental conditions and its inhabiting species. We do so for the whole planet. We know all the neighborhoods – in the past and the present. Hence other pasts and other presents might help us to make up for future potentials. Back to the future. In circles. (Teaser)

 “On Food — Land- and City-scapes in Digital Architectonics. A Thought Experiment” is forthcoming in the Applied Virtuality Book Series (Birkhäuser) edited by Ludger Hovestadt and Vera Bühlmann in 2023. Therein free thinking is unconstrained by facts. The book is based on the thesis that we live in a world of abundance, full of natural riches and cultural artifacts, full of human intellect and powerful technologies. Our thinking, however, is dominated by the opposite, the notion of scarcity. The limits of nature act as an inevitable necessity. In his book, David Schildberger adopts a novel approach to the subject of resources, with the help of intelligent instruments that introduce new foods, such as chocolate made from cocoa cell cultures, and even a fruit-bearing vine raised far from a vineyard. With his imagined scenarios, the author invites the reader to dare stretch their intellectual imaginations and ultimately presents nature as a contingent.

 “On Food” preludes with “Meditating upon Land- and City Scapes” — an elementary treatise with the purpose of investigating the currently ongoing informational turn. It does so by juxtaposing the characteristics — the decisive Scapes that are distinguished either by the horizontal or vertical and primarily driven by the sensible or the intelligible that which shape orthogonal terms — of the Land and the City. A cataract of thoughts indexes concepts in a way that scaffolds them such that they gain the capacity to host, interiorize and organize as well as diversely cast off and stage future characterizations. The treatise shall provide leads and establish appropriate means to sustain Ventures yet to come. The second part “Mediating Digestible Viands” embarks Four Ventures in the world of food. Venture 1 casts off naturalized grounds and cultivates novel digestible natures. We confect Chocolate from Cacao Cell Cultures. Venture 2 questions crafts and traditions in the vineyard. We raise a remote Vine Yard. This informational instrument allows for the navigation of a probabilistic cloud suspended above the actual vineyard. Venture 3 approaches subjects and objects of wine. We enable symbolic Terroirs that give the wine itself a voice and thus allow for rich Talks. Venture 4 deals with subjects that give values to the object of food. We cast off a Value Cloud from which numerous articulations and values of food can be derived.
 “Voluminous Calli – About Addressing Amenable Assets by Means of a Plant Cell Culture Protocol” provides the means for the logistical breeding of novel Natures. Forthcoming in Architecture and Naturing Affairs, Applied Virtuality Book Series, edited by Mihye An, Birkhäuser, 2020.

 “Savouring a Viand - About Blind Tasting CCCC in the Dark” stages the breathing of the indeterminate of a novel Nature. Forthcoming in Architecture and Naturing Affairs, Applied Virtuality Book Series, edited by Mihye An, Birkhäuser, 2020.

 “Nudged Viands” opens up a view upon our most recent cultural heritage, the modern utopia of living in a lap of luxury, expressed and formalized in an urbanized land- and cityscape relation. Published in Symbolizing Existence—Metalithikum III, Applied Virtuality Book Series, edited by Ludger Hovestadt and Vera Bühlmann, Birkhäuser, 2016.

 “Dynamic space carved out of the richness of the void” stages various characters and an omniscient chorus in a poetic play of ideas. The play explores ways towards novelity by indexing and dramatizing concepts and positions. Thereby a flow of thoughts reveals the richness of a void that, through intellectual ability, becomes a source for new worlds and takes us from necessity to luxury. Published in From the edge of Chaos: Dialogue amongst social theory and practice, edited by Subhash Sharma and Michael Zirkler, IBA Publications, 2014.
